Kaʻaʻawa Sunrise
Kaʻaʻawa Sunrise

Kaʻaʻawa Sunrise

This image was taken during sunrise from Waikane looking north towards the iconic mountain ridge in Kaʻaʻawa. Kaʻaʻawa valley or "Jurassic Valley" as it is often referred to by tourists, is one of the primary locations where the blockbuster film Jurassic Park was filmed, along with many others. Evoking a sense of calm in the still, reflective waters while anticipating the thrill of a new adventure with the dramatic mountains.

Kahana

Kahana

This image was created on the East shore of O'ahu. Waking up in the early hours of the morning, I hiked up this ridge in complete darkness in order to find this vantage point for sunrise. I am particularly fond of this image because of the sweeping nature of the ridge in the foreground blending seamlessly with the beach below, creating an "S" shape. This image is meant to emphasize the flowing nature of life and how unexpected circumstances can work together to create something beautiful.

The valley in view is called Kahana Valley and is one of the more well preserved ahapua'a on Oʻahu. An "ahapuaʻa" is a sociological and geological land division from mauka to makai (mountain to sea), which typically held all of the resources for a native Hawaiian community to thrive on.

Hanohano Hakipuʻu

Hanohano Hakipuʻu

The neighboring valley to Kaʻaʻawa valley is called Hakipuʻu. This panoramic view if Hakipuʻu was created using 10 images stitched together. You are able to see almost the entire North-East coast of Oʻahu in the gorgeous orange light of sunrise. The grandness of the scene is mean to evoke a sense of wonder and awe.

This location was also used extensively in many films within the Jurassic Park saga, as well the film Battleships.

Mokoliʻi Reflection

Mokoliʻi Reflection

The iconic "Mokoliʻi" a.k.a. "Chinaman's Hat" is well recognized on the Windward cost of Oʻahu. This image was created during an overcast sunrise where the tide was exceptionally low, revealing some of the larger reefs along the coast.

Kuamo'o

Kuamo'o

This image was created during sunrise on the Windward coast of Oahu. Framed by an ironwood pine along the coast, the branches draw your attention to the dramatic ridge line of Ka'a'awa Valley, a.k.a. "Jurassic Valley," where many of the Jurassic Park films were shot. In ancient Hawaiian storytelling, this particular ridge is said to be the spine of a giant Mo'o, or lizard that laid down along the shore as is final resting place.

Jurassic Dawn

Jurassic Dawn

This is an aerial image of Kaʻaʻawa valley, also referred to as "Jurassic valley," on the Windward coast of Oahu during sunrise. The prominent features are the iconic profile of the mountain ridge and the lush valley below. This location was also used extensively in many films within the Jurassic Park saga, as well as Kong Skull Island, and several Godzilla films.

Mokulua Monochrome

Mokulua Monochrome

Literally meaning "two islands" the Mokulua of the shore of Kailua are iconic silhouettes along the horizon. This image was taken during an overcast morning with crystal clear waters. The natural current of the ocean has shaped the reef and sea floor in such a way that they create lines of motion leading they eye directly out to the offshore islets. I chose to convert this image to black and white because the light and dark tones were so prominent and telling. By removing the color, youʻre able to have a greater appreciate for the texture and motion created by the reef and sand.

Shoreline Cascade

Shoreline Cascade

This images was created on the North Shore of Oʻahu. Taken during sunset, this image displays the beauty shoreline which varies from beach to beach. In this case, a reef is exposed during the low tide allowing for ocean water to cascade gently over the rocks and seaweed. This image reminds us that even the smallest details can reveal profound beauties.

Lēʻahi Kahiko

Lēʻahi Kahiko

This is an aerial image created of Lēʻahi, or "Diamond Head," as it has come to be known. The warm morning glow of sunrise paints the ridges in dramatic fashion, highlighting the depth and shape of Lēʻahi crater. Lē'ahi is an imposing geographic feature that reminds us of the power of mother earth even within the dense, bustling confines of Honolulu City.

Waimanalo

Waimanalo

This aerial landscape image was created by sticking 4 images together from a drone. Not his morning. the over night waves had created a beautifully organic pattern on the shoreline, with repeating indentations going all the way down the beach. Only from the air could this pattern be full appreciated. Pair that with a dramatic cliffside in the distance and it makes for a stunning image. Waimanalo is known for is long sandy beaches, picturesque offshore islets and clear blue waters.

Timespan

Timespan

I created this image in my early days as a photographer. Hiking along the ridge above Makapuʻu beach during sunrise, I found a stunning vantage point to photography the coastline leading out the lighthouse. The sun was coming up just over the cliffs in the distance and the clouds were being blown left to right. This was the perfect opportunity for a long exposure. Totaling 120 seconds, the extended exposure smoothed out the ocean and stretched the clouds to create a time warp effect while maintaining sharpness in the landscape itself.

Jumanji

Jumanji

This is an aerial image of Kaʻaʻawa valley, also referred to as "Jurassic valley," on the Windward coast of Oahu during sunrise. The prominent features are the iconic profile of the mountain ridge and the lush valley below. This location was also used extensively in many films within the Jurassic Park saga, as well as Jumanji, Kong Skull Island, and several Godzilla films.

Hoʻokahi

Hoʻokahi

Created a few minutes before sunrise, the light illuminated only a small portion of the lowest clouds int he sky, creating a dramatic contrast. The lone offshore islet centered alone in the open ocean to create a sense of quietness and tranquility. This images was made by stitching 3 images together in a vertical panoramic.

Mokulele

Mokulele

Literally translated to "Island Jump," this image entitled Mokulele was taken from the small islet off the Ka'a'awa coast during sunrise. Without being familiar with the geography, you would know that the rocky formation and tiny sand beach in the foreground was part of a tiny islet. The contrasting colors of the sand and rocks lead the eyes up towards the dramatic and iconic ridge line of Ka'a'awa valley, a.k.a. "Jurassic Valley," for its repeated use in the Jurassic Park film saga.
