Touch A Heart's story

People first

Touch A Heart works with people facing barriers to employment, including incarceration, homelessness and substance abuse. It doesn't try to fix anyone. People aren't projects, and growth is cultivated, not manufactured.

So the work starts with the soil, how a person sees themselves and what they believe is still possible. Then come values, then real craft, in paid internships in a working kitchen.

Baker's Heart is that kitchen. Every tray out of the oven is practice at being excellent, and every purchase supports Touch A Heart's training programs.

Everyone is growing into someone. From The Touch A Heart Way

In the photographs

The same story, told in places

Kawika's photographs carry that story too.

ʻĀlina, a deep valley in the Koʻolau carved by rain, sheer green cliffs and a river bed below

ʻĀlina

ʻĀlina means scar. It's a valley the rain carved into the Koʻolau over thousands of years, and the scars are what make it beautiful. People are the same. Someone's past is part of their story, not the whole of it.

Mālie, silky water flowing over a sharp dark reef at Papailoa Beach on the North Shore

Mālie

Mālie is the North Shore after big surf pulled the sand away and uncovered a sharp reef. The water runs over it soft and slow. Something that gentle shouldn't win against rock, and over time it does. That's what steady care does for a person.

From Kawika

Nobody picks the soil they grow up in. I try to remember that before I judge anyone. Touch A Heart built a whole kitchen around that idea. I'm proud to be working so closely with them.

What goes in the box

Made here, and made slowly

Baker's Heart bakes with ingredients grown in the islands, like macadamia nuts and flours made from ʻulu and kiawe. Kiawe is the thorny tree most people walk right past. Its pods become the flour in their kiawe cookies.

Every lace cookie is made by hand, thin enough to see the light through. Most of Kawika's photographs start with a hike in the dark or a long wait for the right light. Neither one gets rushed, and you can tell.

Who's behind it

Baker's Heart Hawaiʻi

Baker's Heart is Touch A Heart's social enterprise bakery. It makes original, artisan lace cookies and biscotti bites that celebrate local ingredients, and it's a working kitchen where interns and apprentices learn the trade.

“We envision a world where people recognize their true value and can realize their full potential.”

Kawika Lopez Photography

Kawika Lopez is a landscape and aerial photographer based on Oʻahu. Most of his photographs start in the dark, on a ridgeline before sunrise or with a drone along the coast. Every print has a name, many of them in Hawaiian, and a short story about what it means.

He also shoots Baker's Heart's product photos, so this box grew out of work the two were already doing together.
